MTD Bookkeeping for Builders: Affordable Making Tax Digital Help from £20 a Month

Steven Ambrose10 min read

If you’re a self-employed builder, carpenter, plumber, electrician or CIS subcontractor, Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax could change how you manage your bookkeeping.

Instead of leaving your accounts until the end of the tax year, you may now need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC.

For busy tradespeople, that’s another administrative job to deal with when you’d rather be out earning money.

The good news is that MTD bookkeeping for builders doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

At MTD Trade Books, we specialise in affordable digital bookkeeping for self-employed tradespeople, with ongoing bookkeeping from just £20 a month and a £99 catch-up service for eligible clients who have fallen behind.

What Is Making Tax Digital for Builders?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is an HMRC system requiring eligible self-employed people to keep digital records of their business income and expenses.

Rather than relying entirely on an annual Self Assessment tax return, those within MTD must use compatible software to maintain their records and send quarterly updates to HMRC.

These updates summarise your income and expenses throughout the tax year. You must still complete an end-of-year tax return.

For a builder, that could mean keeping digital records of:

  • Payments received from customers and contractors
  • Building materials and supplies
  • Tools and equipment
  • Van and allowable travel expenses
  • Business insurance
  • Other allowable business expenses
  • CIS deductions made by contractors

Keeping these records up to date makes it easier to understand how your business is performing and prepare for tax deadlines.

Which Builders Need to Use Making Tax Digital in 2026 and 2027?

For more information, read our complete guide on how to get ready for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax if you’re self-employed.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is being introduced gradually, depending on how much qualifying income you earn from self-employment and property.

The current timetable is:

  • From 6 April 2026: Qualifying income over £50,000.
  • From 6 April 2027: Qualifying income over £30,000.
  • From 6 April 2028: Qualifying income over £20,000.

Qualifying income generally means your total gross income from self-employment and property before deducting business expenses, rather than your taxable profit.

HMRC uses information from previous tax returns to determine when you must start using Making Tax Digital.

For example, if you’re a self-employed builder with £38,000 in qualifying income for the 2025/26 tax year, you would normally need to start using MTD from 6 April 2027, unless an exemption or other exception applies.

This means more builders, plumbers, electricians, carpenters and CIS subcontractors will need to prepare for digital bookkeeping before April 2027.

Getting your bookkeeping organised early can help you avoid a last-minute rush when the new rules apply.

How Does Making Tax Digital Affect CIS Subcontractors?

For more information about CIS and Making Tax Digital, read our guide: Do CIS Subcontractors Have to Use Making Tax Digital?

If you’re a self-employed builder or subcontractor working under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), you may already be familiar with contractors deducting tax from your payments before you receive them.

Making Tax Digital does not replace the CIS system. You will still need to keep accurate records of your earnings, CIS deductions and allowable business expenses.

For example, if a contractor pays you £800 after deducting £200 CIS tax from a £1,000 labour payment, your bookkeeping needs to record the full £1,000 income and the £200 CIS deduction separately.

CIS deductions are taken into account when calculating your final tax liability

Under Making Tax Digital, eligible CIS subcontractors must also maintain digital records and submit quarterly income and expense updates to HMRC.

At MTD Trade Books, we understand how the construction industry works, including subcontractor payments, CIS deductions, materials, tools and business expenses.

With over 30 years of experience in the building trade, we know that most subcontractors would rather concentrate on earning a living than spend their evenings dealing with bookkeeping.

Our affordable MTD bookkeeping service is designed to take much of that paperwork off your hands, helping you stay organised and meet your HMRC reporting obligations.

Can Builders Use FreeAgent for Making Tax Digital?

Yes. FreeAgent is an HMRC-compatible accounting software package that supports Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, making it an excellent choice for self-employed builders, plumbers, electricians and CIS subcontractors.

One of the biggest advantages of FreeAgent is that you may be able to use it completely free of charge if you have a qualifying business bank account.

FreeAgent is available at no additional subscription cost through eligible business accounts with banks including NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Mettle, subject to their terms and conditions.

FreeAgent allows you to:

  • Connect your business bank account and automatically import transactions.
  • Keep digital records of your business income and expenses.
  • Categorise payments for materials, tools, vehicle costs and other business expenses.
  • Record CIS deductions made by contractors.
  • Prepare and submit Making Tax Digital quarterly updates to HMRC.
  • Keep your bookkeeping organised throughout the tax year.

At MTD Trade Books, we use FreeAgent because it offers a practical and affordable solution for straightforward sole trader bookkeeping.

But here’s the important difference: you don’t have to learn how to use the software yourself.

With our bookkeeping service starting at just £20 per month, we can help manage your digital bookkeeping using FreeAgent, leaving you free to concentrate on running your business.

For a busy builder or subcontractor, that means less time dealing with paperwork and more time doing the work that earns you money.

Can Someone Do My MTD Bookkeeping for Me?

Absolutely. You don’t have to manage all your Making Tax Digital bookkeeping yourself.

Many self-employed builders, plumbers, electricians and CIS subcontractors spend long days working on site. The last thing they want is to spend their evenings sorting through receipts, checking bank transactions and worrying about HMRC deadlines.

That’s where a professional bookkeeping service can make life easier.

At MTD Trade Books, we offer an affordable bookkeeping service designed specifically for self-employed tradespeople.

We can help you with:

  • Keeping your business income and expense records up to date.
  • Categorising transactions using FreeAgent accounting software.
  • Recording allowable business expenses, including materials, tools and vehicle costs.
  • Keeping track of CIS deductions made by contractors.
  • Preparing and submitting your MTD quarterly updates where authorised.
  • Identifying missing transactions and helping you get your bookkeeping back on track.

Our service is particularly suitable for non-VAT-registered sole traders and CIS subcontractors with straightforward business finances.

With over 30 years of experience working in the building industry, we understand the challenges tradespeople face and the importance of keeping things simple.

For just £20 per month at our introductory rate, you can get help managing your bookkeeping without having to spend hours learning accounting software.

That means less paperwork, fewer headaches and more time to concentrate on your customers and your business.

How Much Does MTD Bookkeeping Cost for Builders?

Making Tax Digital bookkeeping doesn’t have to cost a fortune. At MTD Trade Books, we believe self-employed builders and subcontractors should have access to affordable, straightforward bookkeeping without paying expensive accountancy fees.

That’s why we’ve introduced two simple, competitively priced services.

Ongoing MTD Bookkeeping – Just £20 per Month

Our introductory bookkeeping service costs just £20 per month and is designed for non-VAT-registered sole traders and CIS subcontractors with straightforward business finances.

Using FreeAgent accounting software, we help keep your income and expenses organised, categorise bank transactions, track CIS deductions and prepare your quarterly MTD updates.

With a qualifying business bank account, FreeAgent may also be available without an additional software subscription charge.

MTD Catch-Up Bookkeeping – Just £99

Have you fallen behind with your Making Tax Digital bookkeeping or missed a quarterly update?

Don’t panic. Our £99 catch-up service is designed to help eligible tradespeople bring their records up to date, typically covering one or two outstanding quarterly periods where the bookkeeping is straightforward.

We can review your records, identify missing transactions and help prepare outstanding quarterly updates for submission to HMRC.

Affordable Bookkeeping Without the Complications

Our introductory prices are aimed at self-employed tradespeople with relatively simple bookkeeping requirements.

Annual tax return preparation and any additional services are quoted separately. Prices are subject to eligibility and the amount of work required.

Whether you’re preparing for Making Tax Digital in April 2027 or need help catching up now, MTD Trade Books offers a practical, affordable solution.

What Happens If You’ve Missed an MTD Quarterly Deadline?

If you’re a self-employed builder, plumber, electrician or CIS subcontractor and you’ve missed a Making Tax Digital quarterly deadline, the important thing is not to ignore it.

Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, eligible sole traders must submit quarterly updates of their business income and expenses to HMRC using compatible software.

HMRC operates a points-based penalty system for late submissions. Generally, a late quarterly update can result in one penalty point, with a £200 financial penalty once the four-point threshold is reached.

However, HMRC has introduced a transitional arrangement for the first year of mandatory MTD for Income Tax, meaning penalty points will not be issued for late quarterly updates during the 2026/27 tax year.

This doesn’t mean you can ignore the deadlines. You’re still required to keep digital records and submit your quarterly updates.

How Can You Catch Up on Missed MTD Updates?

If you’ve fallen behind, there are a few straightforward steps you can take:

  • Identify which quarterly updates are outstanding.
  • Check that your business income and expenses have been recorded correctly.
  • Make sure your CIS deductions and allowable expenses are accounted for.
  • Bring your FreeAgent bookkeeping records up to date.
  • Prepare and submit any outstanding quarterly updates to HMRC.

Need Help Catching Up?

At MTD Trade Books, we understand that busy tradespeople don’t always have time to keep on top of paperwork.

That’s why we offer our £99 MTD catch-up bookkeeping service, designed for eligible self-employed builders and CIS subcontractors with straightforward records, typically covering one or two missed quarterly periods.

We can help organise your bookkeeping, identify missing information and prepare outstanding quarterly updates.

Don’t let missed bookkeeping deadlines become another headache. MTD Trade Books can help you get your records back on track.

When Are MTD Quarterly Updates Due?

For a more detailed explanation of quarterly reporting, read our guide to MTD Quarterly Updates for Builders.

Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, self-employed builders and CIS subcontractors who fall within the new rules must send quarterly updates of their business income and expenses to HMRC.

These updates help keep your tax records organised throughout the year rather than leaving everything until the annual tax return deadline.

Making Tax Digital Quarterly Deadlines

For businesses using standard tax-year reporting periods, the deadlines are:

  • Quarter 1: 6 April to 5 July – submission deadline 7 August.
  • Quarter 2: 6 July to 5 October – submission deadline 7 November.
  • Quarter 3: 6 October to 5 January – submission deadline 7 February.
  • Quarter 4: 6 January to 5 April – submission deadline 7 May.

Some businesses may choose calendar-quarter reporting periods instead, although the submission deadlines remain the same.

Do You Still Need to Complete an Annual Tax Return?

Yes. Making Tax Digital does not remove the requirement to complete an annual tax return.

Your quarterly updates provide HMRC with information about your income and expenses throughout the year, but you must still finalise your tax position through your annual tax return.

The usual deadline for submitting an online tax return remains 31 January following the end of the tax year.
